In Bill Self’s six seasons as head coach at Kansas he has won one national championship, four regular-season Big 12 titles and three league tournament championships. In his first trip to the Final Four in 2008, Self’s team won the title. He was named the eighth head coach in Kansas basketball history on April 21, 2003.
In the past six seasons, all at KU, Self is the winningest coach in NCAA Division I with an 81.6 winning percentage (142-32). Included are a combined 70 victories in the last two years. Under Self, KU has been ranked in the Associated Press top 10 in 60 polls and in the ESPN/USA Today Coaches’ top 10 on 61 occasions.
In his 15th season as a head coach, Self has compiled an overall record of 349-137 (.718). He has posted a 22-9 mark in NCAA Tournament play and has guided his teams to 10-straight 20-win seasons and 11 overall. Self has won eight league crowns in the last 10 years, including four straight at KU. Those other two seasons resulted in runner-up conference finishes.
The 2008 Winged Foot Award recipient for winning the national title, Self is a four-time finalist for the Naismith Coach of the Year Award (2000, 2001, 2002 and 2003), and The Sporting News named him National Coach of the Year in 2000. In addition, Self is one of four coaches in NCAA Division I history to have led three different teams – Tulsa, Illinois and Kansas – to the NCAA Elite Eight. He has advanced KU to the NCAA Elite Eight three times (2004, 2007, 2008), including the 2008 Final Four.
Self has won four straight and eight league titles at three different schools – Tulsa (1999, 2000), Illinois (2001, 2002) and Kansas (2005, 2006, 2007, 2008).
A member of the USA Basketball Competition Committee and board member for the National Association of Basketball Coaches, Self has coached three league player(s) of the year in the last eight seasons. At Kansas, Wayne Simien was the Big 12 Player of the Year in 2005. At Illinois, Self’s Big Ten Player(s) of the Year included Frank Williams in 2001 and Brian Cook in 2003. In all, Self has coached 36 all-conference selections in 11 years of league competition.
Nominated for two ESPY Awards for best team and best game, the 2007-08 Kansas team will go down as one of the best in school history. Ranked seventh or higher all season, KU won a school-record 37 games in winning the school’s fifth overall and third NCAA national championship. Kansas claimed its fourth straight Big 12 regular-season championship and third consecutive Big 12 tourney title. Additionally, a school record five Jayhawks were chosen in the 2008 NBA Draft.
Self’s career as head coach started at Oral Roberts where he played a key role in the Golden Eagles’ turnaround. Bill was a four-year letterman at Oklahoma State University and received his Bachelor’s Degree in business and Master’s Degree in athletic administration from Oklahoma State University.
